A large Chunk of the Democratic Party takes another blow that just may have knocked them out of the party. On Saturday, Progressive activists second chance at reforming the Democratic National Commitee were dashed after their choice for Chair , Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, was defeated by Tom Perez. The vote, which due to party rules, consisted of party insiders, raised questions as it created the perception of unfairness that reopened old wounds felt by the progressive wing of the party after this years contentious Democratic primary.
After the results were announced, many of Ellison's supporters rose from their seats in the back of the ballroom at the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel and have left the Democratic Party. Leaving with them, are a number of leftists who had hoped to move the party to cut ties with big corporations and donors and to create greater focus on labor rights and intersectionality .
"This shows that the Democratic Party can't or won't change and that its time for something new, a fresh party to start over with ," said April Baca, an Ellison backer and supporter of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during the party's divisive 2016 primary race.
Moreover, a number of Prominent activist groups and people have disavowed the decision of the party leadership. This list includes popular unions and grassroots groups like the Justice Democrats, Brand New Congress, and the National Nurses United Co-president Jean Ross, whose organization was the first national union to endorse Sanders in 2015. Ross said she was "bitterly disappointed" by the result and accused Ellison's opponents of running a "smear campaign" against him.
With the recent division of the Democratic Party groups like Draft Bernie for a People's Party, Brand New Congress, and even the Green Party have noted record numbers of new members and Donations . Leaders of these groups have claimed this uptick is due to the large number of disaffected democrats who have decided to join them and possibly leave the Democratic establishment behind.
Whether the progressive wing has left for good is up in the air , but one thing is certain , if the Democratic Party continues to ignore progressives, the rejection may serve as the catalyst to the political revolution that Sanders supporters have been advocating for since the 2016 primaries.
I want to go on record as endorsing Jonathan F. Miller for the Harris County Democratic Party Chair. Jonathan is a grassroots progressive candidate that has worked effectively in Harris County to resist Donald Trump while also working to reinvigorate our local Democratic Party. Jonathan’s plan to bring in and support youth, activist, and minority groups as pct. chairs is the kind of change that Harris County and Texas as a whole will greatly benefit from. Moreover, Jonathan has excellent credentials that will benefit the Harris County Democrats and has been endorsed and supported by Houston Area Progressives , a number of activists, young people, and working class voters that the Democratic Party has had trouble connecting with and needs to earn support from.
Jonathan understands the importance of voter turnout and knows that success for the Democratic Party depends on being inclusive of the communities and people we hope to earn votes from. He is honest, reliable, and willing to work the long hours needed for the position. I believe Jonathan Miller is the person best qualified to be our next Harris County Democratic Chair.
